This week we were reminded about the impact of the instant lottery ‘Scratchies’ in our community.
When it seemed likely that Scratchies might be now sold in supermarkets, smaller newsagencies created an uproar, claiming that up to 90% of their earnings would be lost.
Sadly, the real losers are the members of the public who mistakenly believe that buying Scratchies will bring them riches, which will then bring them happiness.
But given the ridiculously long odds of most lotteries, the only winners are the big gambling businesses.
When it comes to money, Jesus gave us this warning:
No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. (Matthew 6:24)
Why waste your time and money trying hopelessly to get a quick buck from a Scratchie?
Put your real hope in the real Jesus, and seek first his kingdom.
There’s no risk in following Jesus!
