Fifty Shades of Grief

It is a sad indictment on our society that our world has become so numb to pornography that people crave the portrayal of violent sex for entertainment.

With the release on the silver screen of the best-selling novel ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, our world has moved the glorification of sexual violence against women to the mainstream.

Even worse is the decision to release this film on Valentine’s Day, creating the message that real romance is found in violent and domineering sexuality.

Yet despite its glorification of sexual violence, this movie can lead to a different kind of harm.

Renown Christian sexologist Patricia Weerakoon has warned that this movie will “mess up your brain”, because “…if your desire becomes conditioned by porn and that’s what turns you on, normal sex … isn’t going to do it for you.”

Whether you’re married or not, this movie is harmful to you and to others.

But saddest of all, this movie distorts the good and perfect picture of sex that God has graciously shown us in the Bible.

We see a picture of intimacy with safety and sensuality within the security of lifelong marriage in the glorious description of the first married couple before the fall: “Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.” (Genesis 2:25)

Through Jesus we receive forgiveness from our sin as well as the model of the best sex ever.

Why settle for anything less?
