Why we need Christmas carols

Carols are as much a part of our traditional Christmas celebrations as wrapped-up presents under a tinsel-decorated pine tree.

Yet, it wasn’t really until around 500 years ago that singing about Christmas became popular.

In fact, it was the Reformation that really drove people to start to sing about God becoming man, as Christians were freshly encouraged to put the word of God to music.

Yet, singing in Christian gatherings was not really a novelty, given that it was encouraged by God in the New Testament.

We read in Colossians chapter 3 verse 16 we should “let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”

If we should ever need motivation to sing about the wonder of the incarnation, we read it here in the Bible.

Yet, it’s not that we needed anyone to twist our arms to sing! It is such a great joy to hear people sing in one voice about the events of the first Christmas.

My prayer is that this Christmas you will marvel afresh at the truths contained in the carols, as we thank God for sending Jesus to our world.
