Drought and its Consequences

In our: “…sunburnt country of droughts and flooding rains…”  (Dorothea Mackellar) we have come to live with the environment often without really understanding it; just hoping the rains will come.

Drought in the East has reached catastrophic proportions, while in the West good rains have fallen in recent times. Why the West and not the East is a question with no clear answer. However we know our Sovereign God remains in control and will do that which is right for us. (Genesis 18:25)

We pray He will relent for the sake of the righteous and send refreshing rain on the just and the unjust. The Old Testament reminds us God can withhold rain as His judgement on a disobedient people who have turned away from Him. As a nation, where do we stand in this regard?

A more serious drought is one of God’s Word and truth in our nation let alone sections of our churches, including the Anglican Communion. The Federal Election highlighted issues of freedom of religion and speech, “encouraged” by the Israel Folau/ARU debate arising God’s word posted in Social Media.

Make no mistake, the debate and court proceedings are also about our freedoms, which are under serious threat.

Sound, biblically based preaching of God’s Word in our churches and homes may also be caught up by the case. Some preachers and others may fear speaking the truth for fear of the worldly consequences; others may be banned from speaking openly at all.

Which drought do you fear most?  In 1 Corinthians 9:16 Paul says “…for woe is me if I do not preach the Gospel.” NASB.
